About us

Cânhamor was born from a clear vision: to transform the construction industry with sustainable, high-performance materials. In 2020, we began to research the potential of using hemp in construction, analysing its benefits for energy efficiency and sustainability. That same year, we took an essential step towards the future of the company: we found the location for our first factory in Colos, laying the foundations for the development of ECOblocks.

Having found a location, 2021 was a year of testing, innovating and perfectioning. We developed the ECOblocks, studying combinations of our various raw materials in order to create a resistant, efficient and eco-friendly building material. This was a period of intense experimentation and technical validation to ensure the product would meet the highest quality standards.

In 2022, we started testing ECOblocks so they could be certified and began selling them, even though we knew their acceptance in the market would not be immediate. Being an innovative solution, it was essential that we demonstrated and clarified all technical queries to enable architects, engineers and builders to understand the positive impact of this sustainable alternative. The ECOblocks certifications surprised us, showing better results than expected.

The demand for ECOblocks has grown steadily due to an increasingly informed market interested in eco-friendly solutions. In 2023, we started building our new manufacturing unit, a facility designed to be the first factory which controls the whole process — from hemp processing to the final product, ECOblocks, an efficient and sustainable supply. This milestone represents Cânhamor’s commitment to making sustainable construction accessible to an ever wider audience.

The hard work started to pay off. We established partnerships with local farmers, bringing large-scale hemp cultivation back to Portugal. In 2024, Cânhamor was recognised at national level, receiving three awards — Tektónica, Consulai and Expresso/SIC Notícias — highlighting the innovation and impact of ECOblocks in sustainable construction and in agriculture. These awards validate our mission and reinforce the importance of raising awareness and the transition to eco-friendly building materials in the sector. In the same year, we finished our life cycle analysis which gave us certainty about what we already suspected: ECOblocks are carbon negative. With this information in hand, we underwent independent certification processes and obtained the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), which enabled us to declare we have the only carbon negative wall system (masonry + insulation) produced in the Iberian Peninsula.

2025 marks a new phase of growth with the inauguration of the new manufacturing unit. Greater production capacity will enable us to better meet demand and consolidate Cânhamor as a benchmark in sustainable construction. In addition, we have received another award — BPI Prémio Nacional de Agricultura (National Agricultural Prize) 2024 — reinforcing the impact of our innovation in the agricultural sector. We are expanding to larger scale projects, including the construction of hundreds of houses in a fast-growing market. Our presence is increasing significantly with new official distributors and our entry in the Spanish market.
